The STEM Lab (STEM For Kids SC) has been serving families in South Carolina for 8 years and has trained more than 4,500 students. It was founded in Columbia, SC, by a tech engineer and has been voted best after-school program and summer camp in South Carolina. The leadership team offers over 40 courses totaling more than 1,200 hours of instruction and works with mixed grade groups.

The program’s foundation is a 4 Dimensional Learning method that includes Core Ideas, Cross-Cutting Concepts (CCCs), Career Connections and Practices (CCPs), and Social & Emotional Learning, using hands-on mindful inquiry-based activities with purposeful learning. Its curricula and programs align with educational standards including Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), Common Core Mathematical and Language Arts Practice, state-specific Information and Technology Standards, and Computer Science Education Standards. The program states it is “launching young minds into the future.”

Instruction staff, called STEM Coaches, are trained on the curriculum content and the 4 Dimensional Learning method. STEM Coaches include engineers, industry professionals, and STEM teachers, and each coach is background checked. For on-site programs, the team brings instructors and materials, including computers and robots, to the host site, and there is no cost for student transportation and easier pickup for parents. The program can provide custom camps on-site when school is out of session, handle everything from student registrations to program delivery, and customize offerings based on host needs.

Flexible delivery options include afterschool programs, in-school field trips, assemblies, workshops, regular STEM/STEAM classes, and camps. One parent review states, “My son has loved learning more about machines with STEM for kids SC! Mathew has been so great about communicating what the kids are learning about. We are definitely going to be taking more classes from them!” (5-star review).
