About
Camp Compass includes STEAM projects, literacy instruction, math instruction, and Enrichment Afternoons focused on discovery, creativity, and interactive learning. The program also features interactive visits from community partners and field trips as part of its balance of academic and enrichment activities. Each morning, campers participate in academic sessions led by licensed teachers, with small class sizes, differentiated instruction, and assessment-informed teaching to track progress.

Camp Compass is a free summer learning program for underserved elementary students of Springfield Public Schools – District 186 that is designed to prevent summer learning loss and improve reading and math skills. The program uses the “Leader in Me” social-emotional learning curriculum and focuses on the whole child and intentional removal of barriers that might otherwise prevent participation. Camp Compass is part of Compass for Kids, a not-for-profit organization that offers innovative after-school and summer programs and is a United Way Community Partner.
Camp Compass began in 2013 serving 54 children in Springfield and has grown every year since then, with 2024 serving over 900 children and improving the lives of more than 1000 underserved children in Springfield, IL. In one season, campers received 18,207 hours of academic instruction in math and literacy by certified teachers, 10,205 meals including daily breakfast and lunch plus a weekly Backpack Feeding Program for weekends, and support from 55 volunteers who contributed more than 695 hours. The program partners with 28 community organizations that teach kids about art, positive thinking, astronomy, finances, exotic animals, STEM, and more, and these community partners bring expertise in areas such as wildlife, art, science, and mental wellness. The leadership team includes Director of Programs Ryan Reitmeier and Founder and Chief Executive Officer Molly Berendt Grogan.
