Since 2004, Slam Dunk for Diabetes camps have been a place where kids with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes can play basketball, laugh, and share stories. The camps are led by Monica Joyce, Executive Director of Slam Dunk for Diabetes. Kids ages 6 to 18 attend three to four-day, half-day camps across Illinois, Indiana, and Wisconsin, and more than a thousand kids with diabetes have participated in 60 camps in 10 cities and 5 states. Slam Dunk for Diabetes Basketball Camp is free and targets low-income children who could not otherwise afford to attend, and no child is turned away. The mission of Slam Dunk for Diabetes camps is to empower Type 1 and 2 kids to have fun and learn how to actively manage their health, and the day camps are specifically designed for kids with diabetes to learn basketball, be supported, be motivated, and lead healthy, happy lives. One parent shared, “Slam Dunk helped my son to open up about his disease,” and a camper said, “I made friends who I still talk to even after camp.”
