About
The Jr. Civic & Young Artists Program (Civic Theatre Education) offers theatre-based performing arts classes that include instruction in musical theatre, acting, and improv. Students take part in a multidisciplinary curriculum that connects theatre proficiencies with life skills such as discipline, self-confidence, commitment, and team work, with a strong emphasis on developing the actor’s tools: voice, body, and mind. The program also includes performance and learning experiences such as the Jr. Civic Musical, REVUE!, a full-scale musical through the Young Artists Program (YAP), Backstage Pass, Creative Stages in Your Classroom, Christel DeHaan Student Matinees, Relaxed Performances, SneakView, and YAP workshops and seminars.
• Ages: 3–18 years old
• Schedule: Each season includes a Fall Session (September–November), Winter Session I (January–February), Winter Session II (February–March), Spring (April–May), and Summer Camps (June–July)
Jr. Civic has offered year-round, theatre-based performing arts classes since 1941. Jr. Civic classes are available for pre-school and kindergarten students throughout the year, and auditions in August for the Jr. Civic Company are open to students ages 10–14 with previous class experience. The annual Jr. Civic Musical each June features students ages 8–14, and the next Jr. Civic Musical will be SHREK JR. in June 2026, with auditions typically in March. The Jr. Civic Company is for Civic’s most advanced students and is dedicated to the development of good technique regardless of performance opportunity.
The Young Artists Program (YAP) is a year-round series of workshops and seminars for high school students interested in improving their skills in a professional setting and looking to prepare for college auditions and beyond. YAP presents two performances each summer, REVUE! and a full-scale musical, with training during rehearsals and performances focused on character development, vocal coaching, and advanced dance technique. All workshops in YAP are taught by performers and instructors with extensive experience locally, regionally, and nationally.
Backstage Pass offers a behind-the-scenes tour of the theater and illustrates how theatre artists use STEM skills to take a story from imagination to reality. Creative Stages in Your Classroom brings an interactive acting lesson to preschools and elementary schools. Christel DeHaan Student Matinees and Relaxed Performances (formerly called inclusive performances) are part of the program’s offerings, and relaxed performances for each mainstage production include American Sign Language interpreters, audio description, and safe spaces for overstimulated audience members. SneakView opens the final dress rehearsal of each production to social service organizations and serves over 2,500 people each season through free theatre access, and a significant number of complimentary tickets are provided to low-income students for Christel DeHaan Student Matinees. Company members act as representatives for Jr. Civic and Civic Theatre in the wider community.
Education has been integral to the Theatre’s operations since its inception, and students are given opportunities to express their own creativity in a comfortable and educational environment. Instruction at all levels focuses on conditioning both the abstract and emotional elements of the art form and the technical and more concrete skills necessary to perform well. The leadership team includes Brent E. Marty, Director of Music & Education; Holly Stults, Education Programs Director; and Anne Beck, YAP Coordinator. Administrative office hours are Monday through Friday, 9am to 5pm, and the Box Office is open Monday through Friday 10am to 6pm, Saturdays 12pm to 4pm, and 1 hour before each Civic performance.
