About

Mill Race Theatre Company Master Classes offers focused sessions in Mastering Music Direction, Audition Techniques, Special Effects Makeup, and Intro to Stage Combat. Participants take part in specific classes such as Mastering Music Direction, Audition Techniques, and Special Effects Makeup on scheduled dates and times, with materials provided for hands-on practice in the Special Effects Makeup class and specific items recommended for the other classes.

Mastering Music Direction is scheduled for Saturday, June 21st, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM and is recommended for participants to bring a notebook, pencil, and highlighter, with a waiver required for each participant or by a parent or guardian for minors. Audition Techniques is scheduled for Saturday, May 17th, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM, is free in partnership with the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory production staff, and asks participants to bring a 16–32 bar cut of a song, remove shoes to enter the dance studio room, consider bringing socks, and sign a waiver (or have one signed by a parent or guardian for minors). Special Effects Makeup is scheduled for Sunday, October 27th, 2024, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM, costs $20, provides materials for students to practice, allows students to bring their own eyeshadow palettes and brushes, requires advance registration, and is combined with high school students, using moulage (make-up) in EMT instruction to make skills more realistic.

The master classes are part of a series by Mill Race Theatre Company for adults, with student versions of some master classes for incoming freshmen through incoming seniors, and Special Effects Makeup is presented for adults ages 18+ in the Columbus, Indiana area and combined with high school students. Mill Race Theatre Company is the oldest community theatre organization in Columbus, Indiana, with performances in Mill Race Park beginning with “Bye Bye Birdie” in the summer of 1969, and it has been determined by the IRS to be a non-profit business as defined in Section 501(c)3 of the United States Internal Revenue Code. The mission of Mill Race Theatre Company is: “Through the power of the theatrical arts, Mill Race Theatre Company expands minds, develops character, and instills confidence. We nourish collaborative possibilities to entertain, imagine, and explore.”

Mastering Music Direction is led by professionals such as Jenny Gafron, a professional music director and teacher with 20+ years of theatre experience and a Bachelor of Music in Music Education (vocal emphasis) from Millikin University, who teaches middle school music and choir in the Chicago suburbs and directs and music directs their annual musical, and Riley Carter, a band director at Geneva High School and Fabyan/Harrison Elementary School in Geneva, IL, with an undergraduate degree in Music Education and another in saxophone performance from Illinois State University and a Master’s Degree in Music Education from Vandercook College of Music. Instruction in the program also involves Brittany Michelle Davis, an actor/singer/dancer based in Indianapolis with a Bachelor’s of Music in Musical Theatre from Anderson University who has been dancing since age four and specializes in tap and musical theatre dance styles, and Johna Wilson, an Advanced EMT and Primary Instructor at Columbus Township Fire and Rescue who has been teaching EMT classes for about 8 years.
