About

Time Travelers’ History Camp includes interactive and hands-on gallery tours, craft activities, music, games, and special guest presentations. Campers explore hands-on exhibits, use pioneer and Victorian dress-up clothes, see a life-sized replica of a Conestoga wagon, take part in a museum scavenger hunt, and try toys and games from years gone by. A handprint symbol throughout the museum invites young visitors to “Please Touch the Exhibit!” as part of the camp experience.

Twenty-five 3rd and 4th graders attend each year’s Time Travelers’ History Camp at the Johnson County Museum. Campers learn about the area’s earliest inhabitants, pioneer settlers, the Civil War years, and daily life through the mid-20th century. The program follows the museum’s mission statement: “We believe kids learn more when they can interact with exhibits, and use their natural curiosity to play, make-believe, and discover.” Space in the Time Travelers’ History Camp program is limited, and registration begins in the spring.

The leadership team for the camp includes Director David Pfeiffer; Curator Karen Shank-Chapman; Genealogy Librarian Linda Talley; Education Coordinator Jane Hughey; Museum Assistant Kayla McLean; and Administrative Assistant (Tuesday–Thursday) Michelle Cataldi. Staff credentials include degrees in History, Anthropology, Art History, Museum Studies, and Education from institutions such as Loyola University Chicago, Indiana University–Purdue University–Indianapolis (IUPUI), the University of Evansville, and Indiana University. The Johnson County Museum has been given the Home Educators Resource Directory seal of approval to recognize its support of the home school community.
