College Prep Institute Tutoring Services is part of the Center for Leadership Development, whose mission is to foster the advancement of minority youth in Central Indiana as future professional, business, and community leaders by providing experiences that encourage personal development and educational attainment. CLD offers more than twenty Indianapolis youth development programs for middle and high school students and their parents or supportive adults, and all CLD experiences are based on the core values of character, education, leadership, service, and career. CLD depends on more than 200 volunteers to accomplish its mission and offers free tutoring and counseling sessions.
The Center for Leadership Development’s history includes articles of incorporation executed and certified in January 1977, and CLD celebrated its 40th anniversary on January 3, 2017. Its leadership over time has included Henry Bundles as the first president of CLD; Schulyer F. Otteson as chairman of the CLD board; Jerry D. Semler, Robert L. Bowen, and Thomas A. King as chairmen of the CLD board of directors; Stephen A. Stitle as a member of the CLD board of directors; and Dennis Bland as president. CLD received a $1.4 million grant from the Lilly Endowment for a new state-of-the-art building on Doctor Martin Luther King Jr. Street.
CLD partners with Indiana University–Purdue University at Indianapolis to offer a six-week Scholastic Aptitude Test prep program. The College Prep Institute provides meaningful answers and free resources to parents and students and prepares middle and high school students for higher education and beyond.
Parent feedback about CLD programs includes comments such as Ms. JSM’s description of it as a “great place to truly ‘develop leaders’” and her note that her daughter attended the Precious Miss program and enjoyed it, with classes that “helped draw out her hidden gifts and talents,” along with her mention that they offer free tutoring and counseling sessions. Another parent, Brittany Alexander, shared that her boys attended several classes CLD offers, will be attending more in the future, and called it “a great stepping stone for our future leaders,” encouraging every parent to get familiar with the program and enroll their children.
