About
Herron School of Art and Design Community Learning Programs (Saturday School and Summer Youth Art Camps) offer studio-art Saturdays with high-quality art instruction. Saturday School and the weeklong summer youth art camps give students chances to explore new art forms, build a portfolio, and explore new avenues of art and design. Herron's weeklong summer youth art camps are designed to inspire, pique curiosity, and channel enthusiasm, transforming the wonder of each child's imagination into objects of invention and creativity.
• Ages: 6–18 years old
• Schedule: Saturday School sessions in October/November and March/April, with fall and spring classes in three-hour blocks; weeklong summer youth art camps
• Price: Fall: $200 per person. Spring: $200 per person.
Saturday School was established in 1922 and offers high-quality art instruction. Saturday School is currently on pause as new staff members are welcomed, with plans to offer opportunities for artists of all ages from first grade through adulthood in 2026. A culminating student art show is held in Eskenazi Hall rooms HR 259 and HR 269 at the conclusion of Saturday School. Scholarships are available for students in grades 1 through 12, and Indiana University affiliates and Indiana educators receive a 10% discount on all summer programming enrollments. Students in grades 4 or 8 can submit a portfolio to test out of their current grade level into a higher group.
Herron School of Art and Design's mission is to provide professional education in the visual and musical arts for degree-seeking students and to offer opportunities for creative exploration for the broader community. Herron School of Art and Design is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD). The art therapy program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) upon the recommendation of the Accreditation Council for Art Therapy Education (ACATE). The Department of Music and Arts Technology is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM), and the music therapy program is approved by the American Music Therapy Association. Herron students collaborate and engage with businesses, nonprofits, health-care facilities, schools, and museums across Indianapolis, and have professional opportunities through the Basile Center, which allows students to lead, concept, and plan art and design projects for more than 120 clients and community partners. Check-in for Herron's Community Learning Programs takes place immediately after entering Eskenazi Hall's main doors on the west side, and visitor parking is available in nearby garages listed in the program information.
