About
Herron School of Art and Design Community Learning Programs (Saturday School & Summer Youth Art Camps) offer high-quality art instruction where students learn or improve technical skills, explore new art forms, and build a portfolio. Saturday School and the weeklong summer youth art camps include chances to explore new avenues of art and design through structured classes and camps. Herron's weeklong summer youth art camps are designed to inspire, pique curiosity, and channel enthusiasm, transforming the wonder of each child's imagination into objects of invention and creativity.
• Ages: 6–18 years old
• Schedule: Saturday School sessions in October/November and March/April, with fall and spring classes in three-hour blocks; weeklong summer youth art camps
• Price: Saturday School session fees: Fall: $200 per person; Spring: $200 per person.
Saturday School was established in 1922 and offers high-quality art instruction to children and adults. Saturday School enrollment is divided into four groups: students in grades 1 through 4, grades 5 through 8, grades 9 through 12, and ages 18 and up, and students in grades 4 or 8 may submit a portfolio to test into a higher group. A culminating student art show is held in Eskenazi Hall rooms HR 259 and HR 269 at the conclusion of Saturday School. Scholarships are available for students in grades 1 through 12 for Saturday School, and Indiana University affiliates and Indiana educators receive a 10% discount on all summer programming enrollments. Saturday School is currently on pause as new staff members are welcomed, with plans to offer opportunities for artists of all ages in 2026.
Herron School of Art and Design's mission is to provide professional education in the visual and musical arts for degree-seeking students and to offer opportunities for creative exploration for the broader community. Herron School of Art and Design is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD); its art therapy program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) upon the recommendation of the Accreditation Council for Art Therapy Education (ACATE); the Department of Music and Arts Technology is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM); and the music therapy program is approved by the American Music Therapy Association. Herron students collaborate and engage with businesses, nonprofits, health-care facilities, schools, and museums across Indianapolis, and have professional opportunities through the Basile Center, which supports student-led art and design projects for more than 120 clients and community partners.
