Founded in 1986 by Henry Leck, Indianapolis Children’s Choir Music Education Programs and Choirs is under the leadership of Executive Artistic Director Joshua Pedde. The mission of the Indianapolis Children’s Choir is to transform lives through powerful choral experiences and music education, empowering young voices to grow, connect, and lead on stage and in the community. The organization serves more than 2,500 young people each year through programs that include Music At Play for children 18 months through kindergarten, the Foundations Choir for kindergarten singers, a non-auditioned Preparatory Choir program for singers in grades 1 through 3, the Jubilate Choir for singers with special needs, and six performing choirs for singers in grades 4 through 12 ranging from intermediate to advanced treble and mixed ensembles. Its Community Outreach program includes regional affiliate choirs, the Columbus Indiana Children’s Choir as a cooperative effort with the Columbus Indiana Philharmonic, and the Anderson Area Children’s Choir as a division of the ICC. The ICC presents its own concert season each year, including the Angels Sing holiday concert, which is broadcast annually by 13 WTHR, and touring is a consistent part of its yearly plans, with performances on every continent except Antarctica.
Participants in Indianapolis Children’s Choir Music Education Programs and Choirs come from nearly 20 counties, including Indianapolis area suburbs and nearby rural communities. The ICC plays a central role in the cultural life of central Indiana and has performed at events such as Indiana gubernatorial and mayoral inaugurations, The Governor’s Arts Awards, the Indiana Living Legends Award Gala, the Indiana Leadership Summit, the Tenth Pan Am Games, President George W. Bush’s visit to Indiana, the Congressional Medal of Honor Memorial Dedication, Project 9/11 Indianapolis Memorial Dedication Ceremony, the Indianapolis Prize Gala, opening and closing ceremonies of the International Violin Competition of Indianapolis, Super Bowl XLVI in 2012, the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500 in 2016, the 2004 FINA World Swimming Championships, the NCAA Women’s Final Four Championship Game, US Grand Prix/Formula One, the Solheim Cup International Tournament, and the Indy 500 Festival Parade.
The ICC has performed by blind audition for national professional music associations including five national conferences of the American Choral Directors Association, the National Association for Music Education, the Organization of American Kodály Educators, and the American Orff-Schulwerk Association. The choir was honored to sing for Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu during his public address at Butler University in 2013 and performed the national anthem with Grammy-winner Kelly Clarkson at Super Bowl XLVI in Indianapolis. The ICC has produced 15 CDs, including recordings with the Canadian Brass and the Moscow Chamber Orchestra, and two videos, In Endless Song and Lives in Tune: The Legacy of the Indianapolis Children’s Choir, which commemorate major milestones.
Testimonials describe the ICC as organized and a strong partner for events, with comments from organizations such as Meribeth Smith & Associates, Eskenazi Health, the Little Wish Foundation, and the National Anthem of Lay Ministry praising the choir’s performances and professionalism. An American Choral Directors Association representative stated that Henry Leck created something for which there is no competition, and ICC and IYC singers describe the choir as having “grabbed” their hearts and as a place where they do not feel judged.
