Since 1994, the Scottish Rite Masons, Northern Jurisdiction, have been national leaders in the effort to help children and their families overcome the obstacles of dyslexia. The mission of the Indianapolis Children's Dyslexia Center is to provide, free of charge, multisensory reading and written language tutorial services for children with dyslexia through a network of nationally recognized centers of excellence, to promote and encourage education of professionals, tutorial trainees, and the public in teaching children to read, and to advance scientific knowledge of dyslexia through support of clinical research. The training program for tutors is IMSLEC (International Multisensory Structured Language Education Council) accredited, and training courses lead to certification in a nationally accredited program. Requirements for tutor certification include 50 hours of classroom instruction and 100 hours of practicum work under the supervision of qualified professionals, tutoring two children twice a week at a Learning Center, and a minimum of a bachelor’s degree is a prerequisite for this training. The Children’s Dyslexia Centers, Inc. are nationally recognized for their dyslexia tutoring locations that provide intensive reading instruction for children in grades 1 through 12, and the program was recognized by IndyStar as 2020's Best Learning Center / Tutor. Children are eligible for services regardless of economic status, race, religion, or Masonic affiliation, and the curriculum is based on the Orton-Gillingham approach, using a sequential, multisensory phonetic approach to teaching and spelling with a variety of sensory data to help children understand the written word. Affiliations with institutions of higher education enable professionals who train as tutors at many Centers to earn full graduate course credits as well as continuing education credits. Masons support this program as a substantial charitable commitment, doing their charitable work at a level where a difference can be made in the lives of individuals, families, and communities.
