The Phoenix Theatre Cultural Centre was founded by Bryan Fonseca in 1983. Its mission includes growing the community’s reputation as an arts destination and serving as a hub to showcase local artists, host events, and help its neighborhood thrive. The Phoenix Theatre Cultural Centre champions new play development with its own productions, nurtures the visions of its resident companies, and uplifts social and cultural organizations by providing a community hub that celebrates diversity, creates equity, insists on inclusion, and provides accessibility to all. It practices anti-racism through conscious decision-making that centers equity, advocacy, continual learning, and accountability.

The Phoenix Theatre Cultural Centre supports new performing arts companies as they grow professionally through its Collective and is a producing home to many local arts organizations. It shares rehearsal and performance space with fellow arts groups to make the most of a state-of-the-art facility and is home to a performance collective that includes seven professional theatre companies, each their own non-profit entity. Among the resident companies is the Phoenix Theatre, a union theatre dedicated to nurturing new plays and emerging playwrights.

Trail Talks at the Phoenix Theatre Cultural Centre invite guest expert panelists to share their insight about social and political issues affecting the community, many of which reflect stories told on their stages. The Michael O’Brien Gallery Phoenix is a visual art gallery featuring rotating exhibitions from local artists in a variety of mediums, from quilts to glass to paintings, and artists receive 100% of the revenue from art sales. The Phoenix Theatre Cultural Centre acknowledges and honors the Indigenous communities native to its region and recognizes that it is built on the unceded territory of the Lenape, Kickapoo, Miami, Shawnee, Peoria, and Potawatomi people.
