Korea Taekwondo Academy Northwest has served the Indianapolis community since 1994 and has provided Taekwondo and martial arts training at the highest level for more than 30 years. The original Korea Taekwondo Academy opened in 1974, and Grandmaster Donald Cottee began his Taekwondo training under Grandmaster Chul Koo Yoon in 1978. The academy’s mission states that it has always prided itself on building a strong, supportive environment for kids and families to train at, encourages younger students to grow academically, promotes good behavior in school and at home, and teaches students to never give up.
Grand Master Donald Cottee is the Head Instructor, an 8th Dan Black Belt, and is described as the academy owner, with over 40 years of competitive experience and instruction. Grand Master Chul Koo Yoon is the founder of the original Korea Taekwondo Academy and is a 9th Degree Black Belt certified by the World Taekwondo Federation with more than 50 years of experience. Korea Taekwondo Academy Northwest has a number of experienced Black Belt instructors, and Grand Master Yoon conducts all promotion tests only for KTA students, with special classes just for instructors and Black Belts to support consistent instruction.
Grand Master Yoon served as Indiana State Taekwondo President from 1974–1994, was named Coach of the Year by the United States Taekwondo Union in 1990, arranged adding Taekwondo as a new sport in the 1987 Pan American Games in Indianapolis as Technical Director, and has promoted more than 3,500 students to Black Belt status. Master Cottee was Indiana State Champion, a 1980 national sparring bronze medalist, the 1980 Indiana AAU Taekwondo athlete of the year, and a member of the 2018 and 2019 US National Poomsae Teams. The program’s unique features include a focus on improving focus, discipline, humility, courtesy, and respect, encouragement of academic growth and good behavior in school and at home, and a history connected to one of the founding fathers of Taekwondo in Indiana.
Korea Taekwondo Academy Northwest provides Taekwondo in Indianapolis and to nearby communities including Carmel, Zionsville, Whitestown, and Brownsburg. Testimonials from parents describe positive affirmation from caring adults, children gaining confidence, and students being encouraged and pushed to limits they were not aware they could reach.
