Island Grove Park is an 11 acre park surrounded on three sides by the 35 acre Island Grove Pond and is home to the Eager Beaver summer day camp. Island Grove is considered by many to be “The Crown Jewel of Abington” and is centrally located and accessible via the Park Street entrance or on foot from Wilson Place across Memorial Bridge. Historically, Island Grove was an important meeting place for abolitionists during the mid-nineteenth century, and on March 6, 2002, Island Grove Park was named to the National Register of Historic Places. The Abington Park and Recreation Department is overseen by the Park Department Board of Commissioners, and the Abington Park and Recreation Commission holds monthly public meetings on the third Thursday of each month in the Susan Meier Room in Town Hall at 7 pm. The stated purpose of the Commission is to set policies and advise the Superintendent on needed parks and recreation programs, oversee the town’s recreation programs and park areas, and plan, acquire, and develop recreation facilities, parks, and open space areas to meet future needs as the town grows.
