Arlington Center for the Arts is a community arts center that was established in 1988. Its mission is to inspire joy, nurture growth, and build community through a dynamic mix of classes, camps, exhibits, and special events. The organization states that it offers opportunities for people of all ages to discover and express their own creativity and to appreciate the creativity of others.
Arlington Center for the Arts is honored to be supported by the Mass Cultural Council through funding programs including General Operating Support, Cultural Sector Recovery for Organizations, the Universal Participation (UP) Initiative, and Projects and Festivals grants. The center has joined the Mass Cultural Council’s Card to Culture program and Universal Participation (UP) Initiative. ACA has assembled a 10-member Access Advisory Council to develop and implement best practices regarding accessibility in all programs and recognizes local partners in access and inclusion such as the Arlington Disability Commission, Arlington EATS, Arlington Housing Authority, Arlington Human Rights Commission, Arlington, MA Rainbow Commission, the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Division of the Town of Arlington, Food Link, and the League of Women Voters of Arlington, MA. ACA has expanded its network to include collaborations with other community arts organizations in areas of need, including free programming for seniors at the Arlington Housing Authority.
The Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Division connected to ACA includes three staff members: a DEI Division Director, a Community Outreach and Engagement Coordinator, and an ADA Coordinator. ACA has overhauled its hiring practices with Arlington’s DEI coordinator and has hired its most diverse cohort of new teaching artists. The center is creating identity- and activism-centered programming for all ages and is increasing training and professional development for administrative and seasonal staff, including youth mental health safety certification. ACA has hired an Inclusion Specialist to serve the social-emotional needs of campers throughout the summer camp season.
ACA is increasing scholarship funding for participants in paid programs, making 10% of camp seats across all programs available for scholarship recipients, and expanding free offerings. ACA envisions itself as the heart of a welcoming and inclusive community where everyone has access to the arts and opportunities to create, connect, and celebrate in a safe and respectful space.
