Hill House was formed in 1966 as a community center and was incorporated that spring at 74 Joy Street. In 2001, after a donation by Mayor Menino and the City of Boston, campaign efforts, and three years of renovations, the Mt. Vernon Street firehouse opened as Hill House’s central building. Hill House describes itself as “Your backyard in the city,” and its programs of athletic, creative, and intellectual nature serve children from newborn to 12 years. Each year, about 2,000 children enroll in Hill House programs, and Hill House serves as a resource for more than 1,500 families. Hill House Soccer is described as Boston’s largest organized fall soccer program and uses volunteer coaches to lead over 500 players. The building’s main staircase includes brass plaques engraved with the names of donors whose donations made them members of the Firehouse Brigade.

The Hill House mission states that a team of administrators, instructors, board members, and volunteers works to fund and carry out service activities to meet the social, educational, cultural, and recreational needs of individuals and families in Boston’s downtown neighborhoods. Through programs, partnerships, and volunteer support, Hill House seeks to build and foster a sense of urban community and improve quality of life for residents of all ages. Hill House promotes community involvement through monthly senior dinners, outreach, and seasonal events, and the Hill House Outreach Program focuses on donations of time and assets to nearby nonprofits serving women and children in need. Hill House offers programs and activities for residents of Beacon Hill, Back Bay, the West End, and other downtown neighborhoods, and encourages families to give back both within Hill House and through its philanthropic focus.
