• Ages: 3–13 years old

For more than a century, Dedham Country Day School has been a private day school in Dedham, Massachusetts, serving children from pre-K to grade 8. Dedham Country Day Camp and Horizons programs share a pool overseen by a Pool Director, and campers use 17 acres of outdoor space and 160,594 square feet of indoor space at Dedham Country Day School. The Pool Director position jointly serves Dedham Country Day Camp and Horizons programs and oversees aquatic operations, lifeguard teams, and swim instruction.

All Dedham Country Day Camp staff members must submit personal references, as well as CORI and SORI screening before being hired, and parents have the right to review background checks, health care, discipline, and grievance procedures upon request. Lifeguards and swim instructors are required to be certified by the American Red Cross (or equivalent) and have First Aid, CPR, and AED training. Counselors range in age from 16 to over 60, and the counselor staff typically includes college juniors and seniors, college graduates, young teachers, and veteran teachers. Most counselors have worked their way up from being a Counselor-in-Training as rising 10th graders to being Head Counselors in college.

Dedham Country Day Camp offers weekly themed weeks such as Superheroes & Villains Week, Stars and Stripes Week, Dinosaur Week, Color Me Crazy Week, Shark Week, Fizz n' Foam Week, and I Spy Week. The camp describes its mission as reinforcing the wonders of being a child and the joy of friendship, and states that DCD is proud to offer an educational experience that balances challenging academics, arts, and athletics; embraces an inclusive, interdependent community of students, teachers, and parents; creates independent, resilient, lifelong learners through engaging, developmentally based teaching; and inspires students to become caring, ethical members of the larger world by emphasizing thoughtful citizenship and respect for self and others. The camp notes that its small size allows for each camper to get individual attention and that campers have opportunities for unstructured play such as catching frogs in the stream, climbing trees, and building forts in the pine grove.

Parents and campers have shared feedback such as children coming home happy, tired, and full of stories, and several parents state that their children loved the counselors, other kids, and overall atmosphere. Multiple parents and a CIT parent describe the Counselor-in-Training program as fun, informative, and a fully participatory experience rather than just observing. One camper from Upper Camp described camp as “a 10 out of 10,” and several parents mention that their children’s swimming has improved and that they feel comfortable with how organized the camp is.
