Movement City, part of Lawrence CommunityWorks, is a 501(c)(3) organization that describes itself as a safe inclusive space first, with art and creativity following after. The program is rooted in making honest connections among young people, mentors, and peers, and encourages youth to have the confidence to perform or collaborate with partner organizations in order to become creative leaders in the community. It focuses on performing and visual arts in a small workshop format featuring a 1:11 ratio, and youth members engage in digital, performance, and visual arts, technology, academic support, civic engagement, and leadership development activities. Through community collaborations, Movement City aims to provide paid opportunities for youth and supports collaborations that offer them a stage to perform in front of the community. Founded in 2002, Movement City was created through the merger of Hope Street and Lawrence CommunityWorks’ youth program, the Lawrence Young Professionals Network. Testimonials from participants describe Movement City as “another home” and a place where kids from underrepresented backgrounds can feel heard.
