Beyond Soccer is a sports-based youth development organization that uses soccer to connect Lawrence youth to new experiences, with a focus on leadership, healthy living, and academic achievement. The organization uses a holistic model that addresses health, education, and leadership through the lens of sport and has sponsored thousands of hours of summer camps and clinics annually. It describes its work as building futures on and off the field through the sport of soccer and as a proven model for how sport can transform communities, fight systemic inequities, and build brighter futures.
In 2007, co-founder Stephanie McArdle and her mother, Ellen, launched Lawrence’s very first travel soccer team, and in 2009, they led the first Lawrence team to compete in the Essex County Youth Soccer League. Beyond Soccer has been officially incorporated since 2011. The leadership team includes co-founders Stephanie McArdle and Ellen, along with Communications Manager Oriagna Inirio. Stephanie McArdle captained the University of Michigan Women’s Soccer Team.
Beyond Soccer has built lasting school partnerships across Lawrence to bring sport and nutrition into the school day. The organization was chosen by Good Sports for its year-round, soccer-based youth development work in Lawrence and took center stage at the Good Sports Legends Gala, closing out the evening with a video tribute in front of more than 500 business and sports industry leaders at Boston’s Intercontinental.
Parents and participants describe a range of experiences with the program. One Beyond Soccer parent said, “The program pushed my daughter to be more active, increased her soccer skills and encouraged her to come out of her shell through team-building exercises.” Another parent shared, “It made all the difference. Social interaction and being active is so essential to his emotional health. My child had been showing signs of depression until school reopened and sports were available to him.” A grade 8 player in the Beyond Resilient Girls program said, “It has given us improvement with the friendships we have with the team. It helps us see how we are not only amazing on the field but off the field as well.” A coach mentor said, “Being a coach mentor opened a lot of doors for me. I am so glad that I got to be a role model.” Another parent noted, “My kids have enjoyed being part of such a great organization for many years. They have made lots of friendships and gained many skills,” and a soccer parent commented, “Better health and better behavior because it’s about more than exercise it’s also about connection and discipline.”
