About

Sail Salem Youth Sailing Programs offers summer sailing camps and sailing lessons that include activities such as fishing and traveling along a coast with a crew. The program also runs Adult Learn-to-Sail programs using 23-foot Sonar keelboats, along with Tuesday evening sailing programs for adults. In addition to on-the-water programs, Sail Salem is involved in events such as the Sail Salem Pursuit Regatta, the Snowflake Regatta, and the Snowflake Ski Race.

Sail Salem describes its mission as “Fun, safe and accessible sailing” and is a community sailing program that conducts summer sailing camps with educational programs for children. Sail Salem is a Salem Community Boating Center and has introduced the sport of sailing to thousands of children from Salem and surrounding North Shore towns. The organization states that sailing is a sport that teaches leadership, empowerment, respect for the environment, and teamwork, and it has a focus on sustainability and ocean preservation, including sharing news from Sailors for the Sea about the North Atlantic right whale and ocean threats. Scholarships and financial aid are available for Sail Salem programs.

The youth sailing programs are supported in part by generous donations, by the Sail Salem Pursuit Regatta sponsored by the Boston Yacht Club, and by the Snowflake Regatta, described as a fun ski race for sailors and powerboaters. Leadership has included Keegan Whitehair, who is identified as a former Director of Sail Salem.

Parent comments about Sail Salem include a report of one child attending for three years and calling it a favorite camp, with a younger sibling eager to start. Another parent describes an 8-year-old shy beginner who enjoyed the counselors and found the camp very affordable. A third testimonial comes from a family visiting from California, who state that their children wanted to learn to sail in Salem and describe the program as well organized, safe, and fun, with sailing instructors who did a superb job.
