About
Camp Jabberwocky offers summer camps, family camps, and retreats for people with disabilities. The program also holds community events, fundraisers, art shows, and play productions. It is the oldest sleep away camp for people with disabilities in America and has been a summer camp for over 70 years.
• Schedule: Summer camps, family camps, and retreats offered throughout the year
Camp Jabberwocky exists to provide a residential vacation camp for people with disabilities while providing respite for campers’ caregivers. The program states that it provides recreation and enriches the lives of campers by creating a supportive environment that promotes the fulfillment of human potential and fosters independence and self-determination, and that it strives to be a community that is an example of inclusivity, love, and mutuality. Camp Jabberwocky seeks to enlarge the camp community to involve others not directly involved in daily operations and to promote the Jabberwocky philosophy of volunteerism through example.
Camp Jabberwocky was founded in the early 1950s by Helen “Hellcat” Lamb and has been operating since 1953. It is described as the oldest sleep away camp for people with disabilities in America and has been a summer camp for over 70 years. Over 170 volunteers come together each year to enhance the camp experience.
Directors, direct care volunteers, board members, cooks, doctors, nurses, and teachers work at Camp Jabberwocky. The leadership team includes Executive Director Hilary Dreyer; Director of Camp Gabi Cortez; Summer Camp Co-Directors Avis Nora Olsen and Caitlin Lamb; Manager of Facilities, Transportation, and Safety (in memoriam) Jack Knower; Board Chair/Treasurer Mary Beth Grady; Vice Chair Carol Michael; Clerk Kathy Fagan; Trustees Annie Chakravartti and John Lamb; and Founder and Director from 1953–2011 Helen “Hellcat” Lamb.
The camp community comes together in Martha’s Vineyard throughout the year for summer camps, family camps, and retreats, as well as community events, fundraisers, art shows, and play productions. The program describes its year-round happenings as a way to be part of the camp family.
Founder Helen Lamb said about the counselors, “It is impossible to praise these young people enough for the work they are doing. To see them donating their time and energy all hours of the day, never demanding for themselves but always willing to give, is something young people are not supposed to be interested in doing these days, and the counselors at the camp do not fit into an orthodox category. It is a great pleasure to have an opportunity to be with these young people.”
