About
Camp Woodend offers day camps, travel camps, and overnight camps that focus on environmental science education. Campers take part in activities such as looking for salamanders under a log, hiking the AT, cooking food harvested from the Children’s Garden, and visiting the National Zoo.
• Ages: 5–16 years old
• Schedule: Camps run from 8:45 am–3:45 pm, with extended camp available until 5:00 pm for grades 1–6.
All camps at Camp Woodend are taught by experienced environmental educators, and the program maintains a child-teacher ratio of 8–1. From Kindergarten through high school, the camp offers outdoor adventures, including a Teen Naturalist Training (TNT) program, similar to a CIT program, for teens entering 9th, 10th, or 11th grade. Camp Woodend provides day, travel, and overnight camps for families in the DC metro area and is part of Nature Forward, whose mission is to inspire residents of the greater Washington, DC region to appreciate, understand, and protect their natural environment through outdoor experiences, education, and advocacy.
For camp registration, the leadership team includes Director of Youth Programs Brenna Houck (Hazelnut), and families are directed to email Pam Oves for registration details. Required paperwork includes medical forms for camp if necessary, with confirmation materials emailed three weeks before camp begins and health and medication forms due at least one month before a child’s camp begins. Additional forms, when applicable, include a Medication Administration form, an Asthma Action Plan, an Allergy Action Plan, and a Maryland Immunization Certification Form for non-US residents only, and families are asked to leave dogs and other pets at home.
Parent feedback about Camp Woodend includes comments such as a child needing time to unplug, get down in the mud, be creative, and be around other kids in a safe way, appreciation for an “incredible and creative solution” that brought joy and interest into a child’s life over the summer, and gratitude for camps and programs with a desire to attend all summer if possible.
