Since 1976, Wonders Early Learning + Extended Day has provided high quality learning environments parents can trust and depend upon. Its mission is to cultivate curiosity, resilience, and social responsibility in children by fostering high-quality, nurturing, and inclusive educational communities led by skilled professionals. Wonders is a nonprofit provider of NAEYC accredited and licensed early childhood education, licensed before and after school care, and licensed summer camps, with flexible programs for children two months through Grade 8 in Montgomery County, MD and Washington, DC. Wonders Early Learning programs nurture social and emotional development and prepare children for Kindergarten, and Wonders Extended Day curriculum includes language and literacy, mathematical thinking, scientific thinking, social studies, personal and social development, physical development and the arts. Wonders Summer Camp utilizes educational and engaging play-based themes, and all programs use child-centered and hands-on learning that fosters cognitive, physical, and social-emotional learning in classroom communities that are welcoming, respectful, and equitable, with social justice and anti-bias education integrated into the programs. Many Wonders teachers are pursuing advanced degrees in education, approximately 80% of the annual budget is directed to staff compensation, and Wonders believes its programs support the workforce of today while building the workforce of tomorrow. The Executive Director is Joanne Hurt, and the Program Director for Wonders Extended Day at Chevy Chase Elementary School is Eryn Mitchell. Wonders leadership teams advocate for increased public investment in the child care sector by lending their voices and experiences to help inform policies that impact their work in the region, and Wonders shall not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, marital status, gender, age, or sexual orientation. Parents describe Wonders programs as wonderful after care and early childhood learning options, note that their children love the teachers and activities, and say that teachers are engaged and good with children, with many pursuing advanced degrees in education. Parents also report that their children enjoy aftercare so much they are sometimes upset to be picked up early, and they thank the teachers and educators for making Wonders a great time for their children.
