Frederick County 4-H Camp & Activities Center

Frederick County 4-H Camp & Activities Center hosts 4-H Projects, 4-H Club Meetings, 4-H Activities, and 4-H Camp, along with events such as business meetings, retreats, weddings, picnics, pool parties, bingo, 20/20 nights, and public dinners. The center includes four cabins that each sleep 25 people, a large banquet hall, picnic pavilions, a swimming pool, hiking trails, vesper and campfire sites, storage sheds, and a caretaker’s house.

Since 1977, hundreds of 4-H members, volunteer adult 4-H leaders, and county citizens have contributed time and resources to develop the camp and activity center, following a committee formation in 1974 and land purchase in 1977. Articles of Incorporation for an educational, non-profit, and non-discriminatory organization were obtained in December 1977, major construction began in 1981, a 6,300 square foot Butler building seating 350 for banquets opened in 1983, and a caretaker’s house was added in 1995. The stated purpose of the center is to provide a facility for 4-H camping and other 4-H and youth activities, with educational programs for campers designed to promote purposeful recreation and intelligent use of leisure time, encourage understanding of nature, wildlife, and conservation of natural resources, develop relationships and friendships while understanding personal differences of others, encourage testing of potential career choices, and develop leadership skills to participate as informed citizens in community affairs. Frederick County 4-H Volunteers maintain and manage the facility with support from community donations and rentals, and all fundraising work is done by volunteers, with the camp caretaker as the only employee. The property covers 91.6 acres, includes an Olympic size swimming pool with bathhouse and a picnic pavilion large enough to host 350 people, and has an estimated building and development value exceeding one million dollars with an annual budget over $100,000.
