Glen Echo Park Aquarium opened on 9/19/15 in a building that dates back to about 1921 and has previously been used as a roller coaster from 1921 to 1968, horse stables, Discovery Creek from 1998 to 2013, and a stone masonry. The leadership team includes Director Andrew Wilson, Education Specialist Ariel Plotnick, Outreach Instructor Education Specialist Greg Latronica, and Education Specialist Annie Wilder. Andrew has been a marine biologist since 1992, Ariel is a University of Delaware graduate who gives daily tours, runs summer camps, maintains tanks, and leads field trips, Greg is a Georgetown University graduate who leads outreach within the DMV and gives daily tours, and Annie is a University of Maryland student who gives tours and assists with managing summer camp. The program’s number one goal is education, with a mission to encourage stewardship and conservation through educating people about the bay and its large watershed. Glen Echo Park Aquarium was founded by Under the Sea, a marine biology outreach company based in Sterling, VA, and all visits use timed entry with tickets reserved online in advance, with payment by cash or card at the door and a phone contact for handicap or stroller-accessible parking details.
