The Boys & Girls Clubs of Harford County began in 1990 in Aberdeen, Maryland. The organization states a mission “to inspire and enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens.” It provides services in five core areas: character and leadership development, health and life skills, education and career development, the arts, and sports, fitness and recreation, and serves more than 7,500 youth annually. It is known for serving more kids, more often, and is neighborhood-centered with programming in character development, educational enhancement, and career exploration. The organization employs full-time youth development professionals trained to implement its programs, and its Board of Directors received a 2017 Silver Award from Boys & Girls Clubs of America for engagement and 100% individual contributions in 2016. Unique features include a mobile initiative that provides youth development programming and food access to under-resourced communities, as well as licensed care in several school locations in Harford, Cecil, and Kent Counties for before and after school.
