Greenwell Foundation Programs are operated by Greenwell Foundation, Inc., a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to providing accessible and inclusive programs, services, and facilities for community members with and without disabilities in Southern Maryland. The mission of Greenwell Foundation is to provide educational, therapeutic and recreational programs for people with and without disabilities in a natural environment at Greenwell State Park. The foundational program areas are equestrian, nature connection and outdoor programs for children and adults with intellectual, developmental and physical disabilities, and activities are often linked with volunteer opportunities.
Greenwell Foundation operates Equestrian, Nature, Veterans, and Summer Camp programs, and its Therapeutic Riding Program is meant for participants with physical and intellectual disabilities, with veterans particularly welcome. The Greenwell Foundation Therapeutic Retreat Project features longer, eventually overnight, stays and reflective time that is facilitated by a therapist. Greenwell Foundation also offers charter boat fishing trips and trail rides for local veterans, as well as kayak fishing tours.
Greenwell Foundation was established in 1966 by John Philip Greenwell, Jr., who envisioned a place where people with disabilities could experience health benefits, the beauty of nature and the joy of outdoor recreation. The park opened to the public in the mid-1990s, and in 1997 Greenwell Foundation began offering active programs. Annually, more than 60,000 people visit the park and hundreds of people participate in Greenwell Foundation programs, with new programs being developed in response to community need.
Greenwell Foundation currently serves individuals from St. Mary’s, Calvert, and Charles counties, as well as from Prince George’s County and Washington, D.C. The programs are for veterans, active military, military families and people with and without disabilities, and include outdoor nature connection and therapeutic, environmental and recreational programs. Greenwell Foundation offers inclusive programs to individuals, families, centers and businesses, and describes its vision as a healing destination where people of all abilities find opportunities for growth nourished by nature, state-of-the-art programs, history, a sense of peace and the loving kindness of an evolving community.
Greenwell Foundation is an independent entity and receives no financial support from the state of Maryland or any agency thereof, including the Maryland Park Service or the Department of Natural Resources.
