In 1966, John Philip Greenwell, Jr. established Greenwell Foundation and donated his property to the state of Maryland, and the park opened to the public in the mid-1990s. In 1997, Greenwell Foundation began offering active programs, including a Therapeutic Riding Program meant for participants with physical and intellectual disabilities, with veterans particularly welcome. The mission of Greenwell Foundation is to provide educational, therapeutic and recreational programs for people with and without disabilities in a natural environment at Greenwell State Park. Greenwell Foundation, Inc. is a nonprofit organization that provides accessible and inclusive programs, services and facilities for community members with and without disabilities in Southern Maryland, including outdoor nature connection and therapeutic, environmental and recreational programs. Programs are for veterans, active military, military families and people with and without disabilities, and foundational program areas include equestrian, nature connection and outdoor programs for children and adults with intellectual, developmental and physical disabilities.
Greenwell Foundation serves individuals, families, centers and businesses, and currently serves people from St. Mary’s, Calvert, and Charles counties, as well as from Prince George’s County and Washington, D.C. Annually, more than 60,000 people visit the park, and hundreds of people participate in Greenwell Foundation programs. Activities are often linked with volunteer opportunities for veteran participants. The Greenwell Foundation Therapeutic Retreat Project features longer, eventually overnight, stays and reflective time that is facilitated by a therapist. For charter boat fishing trips, lunch and all equipment are provided.
Greenwell Foundation’s vision is a healing destination where people of all abilities find opportunities for growth nourished by nature, state-of-the-art programs, history, a sense of peace and the loving kindness of an evolving community. Greenwell Foundation is an independent entity funded by program fees, donations, sponsorships, grants and gifts, and receives no financial support from the state of Maryland or any agency including the Maryland Park Service or the Department of Natural Resources. A significant portion of the operating budget is generated by program fees, and every effort is made to keep program fees as low as possible so that everyone may participate without creating a financial burden. Greenwell Foundation’s funding also comes from the St. Mary’s County Commissioners, the United Way, grants, private philanthropy organizations, and supporters, and the organization works with a variety of groups to obtain scholarships for program participants and sponsorships for an annual event. Through an innovative partnership with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Greenwell Foundation has rent-free use of all park facilities and receives manpower support for upkeep, and the property has been consistently upgraded to improve access to the buildings, grounds, and waterfront. Donations to Greenwell Foundation are tax deductible to the fullest extent allowed by law.
The leadership team includes Executive Director Maria McDonald and Deputy Director Janene Stocking. Program leadership includes Equestrian Program Director Melisa Kennedy; Summer Camp & Nature Director Ally Rodgers; and Advancement Director, Veterans & First Responders Program Christopher Davies. Additional staff roles include Marketing Director Keyarra Pratley; Office Manager & Program Assistant Connie Sperling; Equestrian Volunteer Coordinator Janis Clifton; Operations Assistant Jess Fender; Education Consultant Leigh Deane; Bookkeeper Joy Myers; Community Coordinator Ashlyn Conley; and Nature Program Support & Summer Camp Counselor Joanna Cleaver. The Greenwell Foundation Board of Trustees includes Dennis England (President), John F. Tarrant, Esq. (Vice President), Jane Tyson (Treasurer), Frannie Bostich (Secretary), Joe Anderson, Teri Branch, Mark Duval, Usha Iswara, Kathryn Kopanke, Dr. Janine Wert, and Bob Randall. Long before the Americans with Disabilities Act, John Philip Greenwell envisioned a place where people with disabilities could experience health benefits, the beauty of nature and the joy of outdoor recreation, just like anyone else.
