Greenwell Foundation, Inc. is described as a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to providing accessible and inclusive programs, services and facilities for all community members, with and without disabilities, in Southern Maryland. Its mission is to provide educational, therapeutic and recreational programs for people with and without disabilities in a natural environment at Greenwell State Park. The organization’s vision is a healing destination where people of all abilities find opportunities for growth nourished by nature, state-of-the-art programs, history, a sense of peace and the loving kindness of an evolving community. Annually, more than 60,000 people visit the park, and hundreds of people participate in the programs each year, with new programs being developed in response to community need. Greenwell Foundation serves individuals from St. Mary’s, Calvert, and Charles counties, as well as from Prince George’s County and Washington, D.C., and serves the needs of the community by offering inclusive programs to individuals, families, centers and businesses. Its funding comes from program fees, the St. Mary’s County Commissioners, the United Way, grants, private philanthropy organizations, and supporters, and it also works with a variety of organizations to obtain scholarships for program participants and sponsorships for its annual event. Greenwell Foundation is funded solely by program fees, donations, sponsorships, grants and gifts and receives no financial support from the state of Maryland or its agencies. An innovative partnership between the Maryland Department of Natural Resources and Greenwell Foundation provides rent-free use of all park facilities and a substantial manpower contribution towards the overall upkeep of the park, and through this partnership the property has been consistently upgraded to improve access to the buildings, grounds, and waterfront.
