Club SciKidz was established in 1997, with its first summer camp called “Special Effects,” and in 2001 it added Camp Young Scientist; over time it expanded to more than 50 science camp themes, and since 1997 more than 60,000 children have attended its science day camps and school programs. The Maryland program is led by founder Victor Bowman, who earned a Master’s in Education and taught science for Baltimore County Public Schools, along with Bob and Sue Hagan, owners and founders of Club SciKidz, who together have over 30 years of teaching experience and both hold a Master’s Degree in Education. The program states that its mission is to nurture in children a life-long passion for inquiry and discovery, support STEM education in Maryland, and promote scientific and STEM literacy in the Baltimore area.
Club SciKidz Maryland offers year-round STEM programs, including summer camps, after school STEM programs, science assemblies, in-school field trips, and days off school or vacation break programs. It describes its camps as carefully crafted to be interactive, inspiring, and fun, with units and science lessons that are rigorously researched by science educators with help from teachers and children, and that engage students in observation, measurement, identifying properties, and experimentation in life, earth, and physical science concepts. The organization describes itself as the best place under the sun for extraordinary summers and notes that its interactive programming also serves to support STEM education in the state of Maryland, with current after school programs run through Howard County Rec & Parks.
