• Ages: 3–18 years old
• Schedule: Call the office at (207) 699-3330, Monday–Thursday, 10AM–3PM, for schedule details.
STAGES Youth Theater began in April 2007 as STAGES: The Performing Arts Academy for Kids in Scarborough, Maine, joined Mad Horse Theatre Company in a South Portland venue in 2010, and was re-established in 2016 as the non-profit organization STAGES Youth Theater. In June of 2025, STAGES is relocating rehearsals, classes, and other educational events and programs to a new space on the Woodfords Congregational Church campus, and in 2027, STAGES Youth Theater will mark 20 years of operation. Since opening in 2007, the organization has produced almost 200 all-student plays and musicals and has developed new, original dramatic work for young people through its Theater for Young Audiences program. The mission of STAGES Youth Theater is to unlock self-discovery in young people through the transformative power of theater.
STAGES Youth Theater has formed partnerships over nearly two decades to bring customized educational programs to public and independent schools across southern Maine and has represented its theater work at career fairs, arts celebrations and festivals, panel discussions, and other community events. Each season, the organization provides part-time employment to 30–40 Maine theater artists, educators, and administrators. Its ongoing work includes innovation of non-competitive educational theater models and practices that are designed to meet each student where they are, and its core values include recognizing and celebrating the uniqueness of each person, nurturing artists and creativity in all forms, treating everyone with respect and kindness and being open to new experiences, and practicing innovation and risk-taking.
Alumni and parents describe their experiences with STAGES Youth Theater in several ways: one alum, Sarah Krause, reports becoming more interested in theater through STAGES and recalls performing on stage with confidence and enjoying being part of many shows. Another alum, Brooke Papineau, thanks STAGES for helping with making friends, coming out of a shell, and providing a place to explore personal art. A parent, Beth Doane, states that she did not want her children anywhere else during their formative years and describes the atmosphere at STAGES as supportive.
