The program’s mission statement is to encourage a love of cooking and baking early by offering a variety of classes designed for kids throughout the year. Classes are taught in teaching kitchens and online for virtual classes. The program offers hands-on baking and cooking classes in small class sizes, with classes limited in size and including at least two instructors, and each class includes a discussion of ingredients and a time to taste. In-person classes include all measuring and cleaning up done for participants, and participants leave with food they made and a generous amount of baked goods to share with friends and family.

Virtual kids’ classes are generally recommended for kids 8 and up, but younger kids that enjoy cooking are welcome, and most kids classes done virtually will need the participation of an adult. In-person classes (except for family classes and kids camps) are designed for adults 17 and up, and virtual classes (except for virtual kids classes) are designed for adults, but households are welcome to participate together. The program also offers the ability to customize the experience with hands-on private baking or cooking classes, both in-person or virtual.

The leadership and staff team includes suSAN cHagAs as BAKE! Principal & Instructor; jeN COhEn and laurie EwAsek as BAKE! The program partners with By the Pound by sharing specific ingredients needed for classes so that many of them are available to families. Suggested places to buy ingredients and equipment include Zingerman’s Bakehouse, Zingerman’s Delicatessen, Zingerman’s Mail Order, Downtown Home and Garden, By the Pound, King Arthur Baking Co., Janie’s Mill, and Breadtopia, including particular flours, spices, and baking chocolates from Zingerman’s Mail Order.

Parent and participant feedback includes comments that the classes are organized and well thought out, that instructors are described as phenomenal, and that participants report learning about the “whys” of baking, helpful tips and tricks, and having epiphany moments even with foods they already know how to cook. Testimonials also mention fresh ingredients with no preservatives, feeling less intimidated by baking, and positive experiences with private birthday classes described as fun and laid-back.
