About

Gym America Summer Camps offers gymnastics along with Preschool Playtime, instructional Open Gym, and camp enrichment activities. Campers take part in activities on gymnastics equipment and in supervised play and open gym time. The program offers half-day camps as well as full-day camps every week during summer.

Gym America Summer Camps takes place in a state-of-the-art gymnastics facility. Camps are open to school-age children and preschoolers, and space is limited. Preschool Playtime is staff supervised playtime for children ages 18 months to 4 years old, and instructional Open Gym is a staff supervised, hour-long open gym for children ages 5 to 10 years old. During instructional Open Gym, students are encouraged to work on perfecting skills they have been taught in class, jump on the trampolines, and explore gymnastics.

Gym America was established in 1979 by Claudia and Ed Kretschmer and has been in business for over 40 years, with over 43 years of providing gymnastics instruction. The leadership team includes owners and directors Claudia Kretschmer and Ed Kretschmer, along with program and team directors such as Heather Helms, Kurtis Rosen, Kayla Mangas, Sarah Strzalkowski, Jamie Krol, Shauna MacMillian, Kim Tanana, Patty Sacco, and others in instructional, preschool, office, and team roles. Gym America coaches Compulsory, Xcel, and Optional levels and has had National level athletes for over 30 years, has competed at USA Championships, and has produced over 38 college athletes, including many collegiate team captains and scholar athletes.

Gym America’s mission is to play a constructive role in the development of healthy, confident, disciplined, and responsible children and to develop each individual’s gymnastics potential in a safe and enjoyable atmosphere. The program states that it builds strong and confident children, welcomes children of all ages and abilities, and aims to be a positive and welcoming environment for all levels of gymnastics. Gym America’s competitive team program uses the motto “Gymnastics Today. Character for Life.”

The staff are members of USA Gymnastics and the Elite Coaches Association. Gym America has a standard of safety certification programs and background checks, every instructor goes through a training program, and all staff members are USAG safety certified. The program states that it works to create a fun and engaging environment, is mindful of standards and expectations for safety, and is diligent not about perfection, but about getting there in a safe and healthy way.

Gym America has been voted #1 in Washtenaw County for gymnastics and describes itself as a state-of-the-art gymnastics facility serving the community. Customer service hours are Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 7:30 PM and Saturday from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM, and it is closed on Sunday. The program states that students will be instructed on all gymnastics events, will develop their gymnastics skills, and will build self-esteem with the help of coaches. It also states that campers have a blast learning gymnastics, making memories, and participating in camp enrichment activities, and that families may enroll at any time.
