About
SCamp Summer Camp offers themed exploration activities at the center and chances for children to explore local attractions. Campers go to the pool, visit the library, and spend time at local parks as part of the program.
• Ages: 6–10 years old
• Schedule: The program runs eleven weeks during the summer months, and families may sign up for one to eleven weeks of care, two or more days per week.
• Price: A $100 non-refundable deposit is required with registration, and payments are due June 1, July 1, and August 1 for campers attending through August.
SCamp Summer Camp is part of Gretchen’s House, which has been providing child development programs for infants through school-age children since 1982. It is a full-day program for children who have completed kindergarten through fourth grade, and the teacher-to-child ratio for most activities is 1:10. Children are transported in Gretchen’s House vehicles, and anyone using the centers must follow a nut-free policy. Well-trained, educated teachers are described as the cornerstones of this childcare program, and the program uses the research-based Weikart Center for Youth Quality Assessment tool for Social Emotional Learning. Gretchen’s House programs are licensed by the state of Michigan and accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), and the organization has a partnership with the HighScope Educational Research Foundation.
Gretchen’s House is a locally owned and operated family of nine early learning childcare centers in Ann Arbor, Michigan, with satellite centers in Ypsilanti, Marquette, and Houghton, and it offers programs for infants through after-school child care. Some buildings have space available for after-hours activities by currently enrolled families and non-profit groups, and the centers include engaging spaces indoors and out. Registration for SCamp Summer Camp begins in March, and the first and last weeks of camp are reserved for children who are attending at least three other weeks of camp. The SCamp program states that it intentionally prioritizes and supports children in spending time in ways that are interesting and meaningful to them and that it supports school-age children in exploring and following their intentions and ideas.
One parent from Oak Valley reported seeing improvements in a child’s language, social-emotional, and independent living skills after moving to Gretchen’s House and mentioned frequent teacher check-ins and a daily hot lunch program. Another parent from Dexter stated that a two-year-old child enjoys attending, asks to see the teachers on non-class days, and likes the outdoor space. A parent from Traver described Gretchen’s House – Traver as a gift to their three children over four years and noted that a grade school child can walk over after school with other kids attending after-care. A parent from Mt. Pleasant and Mt. Vernon, who is an educator and literacy specialist, reported being impressed by how teachers foster a love of learning and encourage children to be curious, intellectual, silly, and independent in a safe and loving environment. Another parent from Dhu Varren stated that in six years of having three children at the center, they have not worried about the care their children received and have appreciated the support, guidance, and partnership of the teachers.
