Bloomington Karate Center has been teaching students continually since it first opened in April 1974 and has been doing business in Bloomington since 1974, longer than any other martial arts school in Bloomington. Today the school is run by a coordinated effort of Grandmaster Tim Mullin and his Black Belts and is described as the oldest and largest martial art school in Bloomington. The Bloomington Karate Center effectively combines Hapkido and Taekwondo in its courses, and students can earn world recognized ranking in both forms of martial arts.
The Bloomington Karate Center was first opened by then 8th Degree Master Jun Sun Hyon. Upon retirement, Master Hyon sold the Bloomington location to Grand Master Tim Mullin, who had been running the location since 1975. In 1998, C.B. Bunkholt, a 5th Degree, K.I.C.K. World Super Featherweight Kickboxing Champion and a student of Grand Master Mullin's, became the active head instructor.
All instructors at Bloomington Karate Center are certified and accredited by The World Hapkido Federation and The USA Hapkido Central Association. Bloomington Karate Center is the midwest headquarters for Kick International, which serves as the National Governing Body in North America for the World Association of Kickboxing Organizations (WAKO), the exclusive world governing body approved by the Sport Accord, formatting and guiding the sport of kickboxing for future Olympic acceptance. Bloomington Karate was voted Readers' Choice Award for Best Martial Arts School 2023.
BKCI is run solely by volunteers. Its instructors include a diverse group of professionals from many different backgrounds, including doctors, business owners, attorneys, financial advisers, programmers, school teachers, artists, and law enforcement professionals. The program is able to keep tuition down and offer instruction without contracts because instructors are not teaching as a way to make a living, and they state that they teach because they love the martial arts and want to promote and pass on the art and science of Hapkido and American Kickboxing.
Bloomington Karate has been training amateur and professional fighters for over 30 years. During that time it has trained and been home to several national and world champions at both the professional and amateur level, including World Super Featherweight Kickboxing Champion C.B. Bunkholt. Bloomington Karate continues to train fighters for competition, as a means of conditioning and staying in shape, and as an aspect of its overall martial arts training.
The school states that it can offer a new and different way to grow or add a new dimension to a person’s thought that can be of use in attitude toward a job and life in general. Bloomington Karate is a sponsor of the Rescue Our Kids program. It has worked with law enforcement agencies for many years in basic and advanced applications of Hapkido and offers discounts to law enforcement officers.
