The program is led by experienced golf instructors dedicated to nurturing each participant's unique abilities. Legacy Youth Golf membership includes golf fee and range balls valued at $280. The program is for participants of all skill levels and places emphasis on development of life skills such as patience, perseverance, and teamwork. Legacy Summer Junior Golf Program has access to top-notch golf facilities, including well-maintained courses and dedicated practice areas, and spots are limited and filled on a first come, first served basis.
The course was designed by nationally accredited golf architect Garret Gill and opened for play in 1998. Shattuck-St. Mary’s School, founded in 1858, participates in nine Centers of Excellence, including Golf, and is located just northwest of The Legacy golf course. Shattuck-St. Mary’s campuses are included in the National Historic Register.
The Legacy golf course has three kinds of holes: slightly hilly with classic tree-lined fairways; rolling topography with prairie grasses creating Scottish style links; and holes with vistas that include Shattuck-St. Mary’s in the background. Legacy Golf is a 6,500-yard, 18-hole Championship facility with a course rating of 71.5 and a slope of 136, and it is located 35 minutes from the southern suburbs of the Twin Cities metro.
The program’s leadership team includes Cres Stophel, Director of Operations, and Tim Arett, GCSAA Head Superintendent. The mission statement for Legacy Summer Junior Golf Program states that it is designed to provide a fun and educational experience for participants of all skill levels, fostering a love for golf that will last a lifetime.
One testimonial describes Legacy Golf as a “gem of a course” with fairways and greens in “immaculate condition,” noting a links-style front nine and a back nine with tree-lined holes and views overlooking the area, and concludes with “Very fun course to play and I’ll definitely be back!” (Daniel Eldien).
