Stages Theatre Company was founded in 1984 and is recognized as a leader in theatre education and production programming for children and young adults at regional and national levels. Its mission states that it is committed to the enrichment and education of children and youth in a professional theatre environment that stimulates artistic excellence and personal growth. Artistic Director Steve Barberio led the planning partnership for the Hopkins Center for the Arts. The organization has received the Harold Oaks Award from TYA/USA for Innovation in Theatre for Young Audiences for its Perspectives on Peace program, the 50/50 Applause Award from the International Centre for Women Playwrights, and MN Best Awards for Best Live Theatre Venue (Gold), Best Summer Camp (Silver), and Best Theatre Group (Silver), and it participated in the Emmy-award winning Clouds video.

Stages Theatre Company was part of a partnership with the City of Hopkins and Hopkins School District to plan and create the Hopkins Center for the Arts. The C.A.S.T. program provides theatre classes for youth with autism and other sensory sensitivities and is designed to create a safe and welcoming environment for students to foster self-expression, social engagement, and confidence. The company offers complimentary tickets to every performance specifically for Indigenous community members and states a commitment to producing work that reflects the diversity of its audiences and communities. This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a Minnesota State Arts Board Operating Support grant, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.
