Stages Theatre Company, which offers Summer Theatre Workshops, was founded in 1984 and describes its history as spanning “Four Decades of Creative Purpose” and “Four Decades of Creative Impact.” Its mission states that it is committed to the enrichment and education of children and youth in a professional theatre environment that stimulates artistic excellence and personal growth. Summer Theatre Workshops are part of a broader organization that features youth in all performance roles in productions and offers an annual Theatre for the Very Young production each August.
Stages Theatre Company created the C.A.S.T. program in partnership with the Autism Society of Minnesota (AuSM) to provide theatre classes for youth with autism and other sensory sensitivities in a safe and welcoming environment, and it offered its first Sensory Friendly performance with “The Mitten.” The organization acknowledges that the land on which it lives and works is unceded, traditional land of the Dakota Nation and offers complimentary tickets to every performance specifically for Indigenous community members. It partners with educators to make arts education inclusive, enriching, and fun, has a planning partnership with the City of Hopkins and Hopkins School District, and received a Minnesota State Arts Board Operating Support grant funded by the arts and cultural heritage fund.
Stages Theatre Company has received the Harold Oaks Award from TYA/USA for Innovation in Theatre for Young Audiences for its Perspectives on Peace program, the 50/50 Applause Award from the International Centre for Women Playwrights, and MN Best Awards for Best Live Theatre Venue (Gold), Best Summer Camp (Silver), and Best Theatre Group (Silver).
