Stages Theatre Company was founded in 1984. Its mission is to enrich and educate children and youth in a professional theatre environment that stimulates artistic excellence and personal growth. Artistic Director Steve Barberio led the planning partnership for the Hopkins Center for the Arts, which houses Stages Theatre Company’s productions, classes, and outreach programs.
Stages Theatre Company created the C.A.S.T. program with AuSM (Autism Society of Minnesota) to provide theatre classes for youth with autism and other sensory sensitivities in a safe and welcoming environment. The company presented its first Sensory Friendly performance with the production “The Mitten” and states a commitment to accessibility and to overcoming barriers that block points of entry into Stages Theatre Company. It offers complimentary tickets to every performance specifically for its Indigenous community and acknowledges that the land on which it lives and works is unceded, traditional land of the Dakota Nation. The Hopkins Center for the Arts was created through a partnership between Stages Theatre Company, the City of Hopkins, and Hopkins School District.
Stages Theatre Company has received the Harold Oaks Award from TYA/USA for Innovation in Theatre for Young Audiences for its Perspectives on Peace program. It has also received the 50/50 Applause Award from the International Centre for Women Playwrights, as well as MN Best Awards for Best Live Theatre Venue (Gold), Best Summer Camp (Silver), and Best Theatre Group (Silver). Stages Theatre Company participated in the Emmy-award winning Clouds video. Its theatre arts programs are designed to keep ticket and tuition fees affordable while maintaining high quality youth-focused programs.
