About
Minnesota STEM Partnership offers robotics and technology activities that include FIRST LEGO League (FLL), FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC), FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC), and a boundaryless robotics program called Sumo. The program also includes coding, autonomous driving, AI, Sumo Robot Wrestling, Middleweight Division robotics, Mammoth Heavyweight Division robotics, webinars, conferences, and Student & Family Career Coaching. Students can also participate in the NSBE Jr. Twin Cities chapter as part of the program’s activities.
• Ages: 4–18 years old
Since 2005, Minnesota STEM Partnership has worked through national and local organizations to promote student success with family support. The program is a K–12 program and alternates meeting locations in both St. Paul and Minneapolis on a monthly basis. Its mission is to leverage decades of specific STEM experience to promote a sustainable high school pipeline towards options in education and careers in technology, and it states that all families and students are welcome and prepared to succeed. The Minnesota STEM Partnership describes itself as a lifelong partnership intended to guide students and their families through a multitude of STEM activities, soft skills, and professional development.
The program offers year-round robotics, volunteer opportunities, guest speakers, and more with a focus on BIPOC student registration. FIRST LEGO League introduces science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) to children ages 4–16 through hands-on learning. FIRST Tech Challenge teams, with up to 15 team members in grades 7–12, design, build, program, and operate robots to compete in a head-to-head challenge in an alliance format, and FIRST Robotics Competition is described by the program as the ultimate Sport for the Mind. The Sumo program runs every spring and culminates in a State Sumo Robotics Tournament, with two Sumo levels: a Middleweight Division for new robotics students and a Mammoth Heavyweight Division for students who are into coding, autonomous driving, and AI. In 2025, Minnesota STEM Partnership will host a regional Sumo tournament with teams in Missouri, Wisconsin, and Illinois.
The NSBE Jr. Twin Cities chapter within the program provides access to engineering professionals, scholarships, and workshops to build and reinforce a STEM identity in youth. Minnesota STEM Partnership is partnered with Revival Fitness LLC and Revival Mentoring to provide coaching and counseling to students during their Professional Development Journey. Through its STEAMFiiT movement, the program creates a whole professional development experience for students to look at wellness from a fitness, nutrition, and well-being perspective.
The Executive Director, Dr. Michael G. Wulf, is an IT veteran with 36 years of corporate and volunteer experience and has received a doctorate in education. Dr. Wulf was awarded the 2024 National NCWIT AiC Educator Award and leads the organization as Executive Director.
