About

The Community Kids and Teen Tutor Program offers academic support and tutoring that includes reading instruction, math instruction, daily homework help, and enrichment activities. The program includes STEM activities, Lego League team preparation, hands-on activities for all grades, library visits, and activities to boost social and emotional skills. Youth receive academic tutoring in small groups, individual reading support, and activities to boost math skills, including delivery of the evidence-based Sonday System.

• Ages: 5–16 years old
• Schedule: School year program hours Monday–Thursday, 4:00–7:00 p.m.

Tutors in the Teen Tutor Program are paid and trained Teen Tutors who are trained to deliver the evidence-based Sonday System, an Orton-Gillingham-based, sequential, and cumulative multisensory language instruction program designed to help English Language Learners fill in gaps in reading. Keystone provides intensive training and supervision so that Teen Tutors can provide evidence-based tutoring, and each Keystone Teen Tutor typically gains 200+ hours of paid work experience and work-readiness training as well as credentialing in an evidence-based literacy program. Community Kids is an accredited program and a 21st Century Community Learning Center, and the Teen Tutor Program model is described as unique because it offers small group tutoring for youth in grades K–5 who have been identified as needing additional academic support, with tutoring done by teenagers from the community who provide both academic and social support to elementary age youth. Community Kids is a year-round program offered Monday–Friday, with after-school and summer schedules that differ, and it is part of Keystone youth programs that include Check & Connect, parent conferences, and educational workshops. Founded in 1939 as a small neighborhood community center, Keystone Community Services is a nonprofit whose mission is to strengthen the capacity of individuals and families to improve their quality of life, and it is supported by the community, generous funders, and volunteers, including a business partnership with Winsor Learning to provide the Sonday System.
