About
Great River School Summer Camp offers weekly camps where campers can take part in activities such as Ultimate Frisbee, Road Biking, Volleyball, Ninja Camp, Sailing Fridays, Art, Theatre, and Lego Robotics. Camps are organized by grade groupings, including Pre-K/K (for campers who are potty trained and at least 4 years old), 1st–3rd, 4th–7th, and 7th–10th, and are open to participants without any prior Montessori or Great River School experience. Some camps, including Ultimate Frisbee and Volleyball, meet offsite.
• Ages: 4–15 years old
• Schedule: Weekly sessions with Monday–Thursday camps (except the first week), with half-day options from 9am–12pm or 1pm–4pm, and full-day camps from 9am–4pm; Friday FunDay add-on runs 9am–4pm for most weeks
• Price: They offer early-bird pricing, sibling discounts, multi-program discounts, and a Pay What You Can program
Camps run in weekly sessions, and families can choose a single week of morning sessions or enroll for multiple weeks across the summer. A morning session can be combined with an afternoon session to create a full day, and this full-day option includes a supervised lunch period and recess; lunch is not provided by Great River School. When registering, families are asked to use the grade the camper will be entering in the fall of 2026.
The majority of camps are led by trained, full-time Great River School staff members, and Great River School usually has two adults in each classroom: a Montessori-trained lead guide and an assistant. The Summer Camp Coordinator is Brent Cummins. The program states that it is dedicated to making summer camp possible and affordable for all through various discounts and a Pay What You Can program.
Great River School describes itself as a Montessori learning community whose curriculum and teaching are informed by the Montessori philosophy and the International Baccalaureate diploma program. The school states that it supports students to be peace-builders in their communities and prepares students for their roles as responsible and engaged citizens of the world. It integrates academic and social experiences in an environment of civility and trust, encourages self-expression, critical thinking, and work for social justice, and addresses issues of systemic oppression through open dialogue. The school also states that it encourages community participation and critical contributions to improve the world, the school, and its practices in creating an inclusive and dignified world for students, and that instruction through travel, practical learning, the arts, and micro-economic ventures provides skills to meet the world with compassion and a sense of responsibility.
