The 4‑H Youth Development program states that it uses a learn-by-doing approach to enable youth to develop the knowledge, attitudes, and skills they need to become competent, caring, and contributing citizens of the world. Rutgers Cooperative Extension helps the diverse population of New Jersey adapt to a rapidly changing society and improve their lives and communities through an educational process that uses science based knowledge. Mercer County hosts its annual 4‑H FAIR at Howell Living History Farm in late July or early August. Mercer County 4‑H STEM Ambassadors designed, built, and set up hands-on technology and engineering experiences at community events Spring Into Science at Princeton University and Rutgers Day at Rutgers University. Rutgers Cooperative Extension, a unit of the Rutgers New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station, is an equal opportunity program provider and employer, and Rutgers University is an equal access/equal opportunity institution. 4‑H staff provide enrichment programs in public and private schools throughout the county on topics that include character education, life skill development, environmental science, science literacy, and healthy living, and they also provide half-day, full-day, and multiple-session special interest programs and trainings for youth, educators, community youth workers, and after-school staff.
