Camp Nejeda has been providing summer camp and other programs for children with type 1 diabetes and their families since 1958. Its mission is to enhance the lives of people with type 1 diabetes and their families through education, empowerment, camaraderie, supportive programs, and fun. Camp Nejeda is the tri-state region’s only full-season residential camp that exclusively serves campers with type 1 diabetes and their families, owns its facilities, and offers a full summer season of residential diabetes camping and other programs throughout the year. Program options include Sleep-Away Camp for ages 7–16, Day Camp for ages 6–15 hosted by Riverwinds Community Center in West Deptford, NJ, Family Camp for all ages, a BFF program for ages 6–16 that allows children with diabetes to bring a sibling or best friend, a Leaders-in-Training (LIT) program for campers age 16, and the Survive & Thrive program for ages 21 and older. Camp Nejeda is accredited by the American Camp Association and is fully licensed by the New Jersey Department of Health. The Camp Nejeda Foundation is active in the Diabetes Education and Camping Association, an organization with members from across the U.S., Canada, and internationally. One parent reported that their child came home with a new outlook on having diabetes, described swimming and rock climbing after meals while managing diabetes, and mentioned that the child was excited to try a new insulin pump and new insertion sites after spending time with peers away from home.
