Lakewood School of Dance & Theatre Arts traces its history in Lakewood back to late 1955, with its first performance in 1956, and it notes both its 70th season and its sixty-seventh year. The studio’s leadership connects back to founder Marianne Silver, and her daughter Angela Corenblith now serves as Owner/Director. The studio continued holding masked dance classes during 2020–2021.
Owner/Director Angela Corenblith holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Speech Arts with a minor in English and Dance and a Master’s Degree in Performing Arts from The American University in Washington, D.C. Her dance training includes work with Marianne Silver at Lakewood School of Dance from age 3, Phil Black Studios in New York, Alvin Ailey Dance Theatre in New York, Twyla Tharp through an American University workshop, American University Dance Theatre, and various master classes with master teachers. She taught in public schools for forty years, was an adjunct professor at Brookdale Community College in Public Speaking and Acting, and spent twenty-seven years as an English and Performing Arts teacher at Lakewood High School, where she directed and choreographed musicals and plays. She has over forty years of experience teaching dance and choreography for dance studios and has been a director/choreographer for over 35 musicals and plays.
Angela Corenblith is a member of Associated Dance Teachers of New Jersey and has been a master teacher for that organization, and she is a past member of Dance Masters of America. She has been elected into the Lakewood High School Hall of Fame and the State of New Jersey Thespian Society Hall of Fame. She also serves on the NJ State Thespian State Board, which organizes the annual NJ State Thespian Festival for high school drama students.
The program states that it encourages students to “leave the baggage” in the lobby and come into the studio to explore dance, music, movement, friendships, and family, and it notes that there is no “one size fits all.” It describes having a diverse studio family and expresses the hope that all who pass through its doors, whether they continue to dance or not, will have been encouraged to be the best that they can be.
