Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Essex County 4-H Youth Development Programs is part of Rutgers Cooperative Extension, a unit of the Rutgers New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station. The programs are supported by volunteers such as 4-H leaders, who use their expertise in youth development along with support from Rutgers Cooperative Extension staff.

Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Essex County 4-H Youth Development Programs follows the mission of Rutgers Cooperative Extension to help New Jersey’s diverse population adapt to a rapidly changing society and improve lives through science-based educational programs. All volunteers undergo a formal training process, which includes a background check, and receive professional training and support from Rutgers Cooperative Extension staff. Rutgers Cooperative Extension is the community outreach arm of Rutgers, working in partnership with local county governments, community volunteers, and the Department of Agriculture, with offices in all 21 New Jersey counties. Rutgers Cooperative Extension delivers practical education across the state through dedicated staff, including county agents, department chairs, and administrators, along with a large network of volunteers such as Master Gardeners and 4-H leaders who support programs in areas like youth development, horticulture, community health, and agriculture. Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Essex County highlights opportunities to connect residents with the knowledge and resources of the state university.
