Princeton Ballet School was founded in 1954 by Audrée Estey and is celebrating over 65 years of excellence in dance education. The school has more than 20 specialized faculty members, and many have attained graduate degrees in dance education and have won major teaching awards. Princeton Ballet School is the official school of American Repertory Ballet, a founding resident company of the New Brunswick Performing Arts Center. Princeton Ballet School is described as one of the nation’s finest non-profit dance schools. American Repertory Ballet has been designated a “Major Arts Institution” by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts and has been awarded a Citation of Excellence by the Council, and it is frequently voted the Jersey Arts People’s Choice Award for “Favorite Dance Company.” The school is known for teaching age and developmentally appropriate ballet technique classes that give younger students more time for movement exploration and provide advanced students with tools to become professional dancers, if they so choose. All students develop self-esteem, self-discipline, and a strong fitness level that will provide a powerful edge in any future endeavor. The school emphasizes a philosophy, faculty, affiliation with a professional ballet company, dedication to live music in the classroom, and facilities that set it apart from the usual dance school, including a commitment to live musical accompaniment and extensive performance opportunities for students throughout the year. All locations are wheelchair accessible, and the studios feature sprung dance floors and Marley from Harlequin Floors. The Princeton facility was designed by Ralph Lerner, an internationally known architect and former Dean of the School of Architecture at Princeton University. The New Brunswick studios are part of the state-of-the-art New Brunswick Performing Arts Center, which opened in 2019. Alumni have gone on to dance with companies including Alvin Ailey American Dance Company, Miami City Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, New York City Ballet, Paul Taylor Dance Company, and Twyla Tharp. As the official school of American Repertory Ballet, Princeton Ballet School is connected to ARB’s Access & Enrichment programs, which include in-school residencies, community events, student matinee performances, and specially designed class offerings, and ARB2 performs at local schools, assisted-care facilities, festivals, and outreach events.
