Founded in 1856, the Capital Area YMCA has been a cornerstone of the Greater Trenton community for 170 years and is described as one of the earliest YMCA associations in the United States. Its mission states that it provides quality programs and services to promote youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility for children and senior citizens in Trenton, Ewing, and Lawrence. The organization notes that it is a diverse association of men, women, and children joined by a shared commitment to nurturing kids, promoting healthy living, and fostering social responsibility, and it refers to itself as the Capital City’s “one stop wellness shop.” The Trenton YMCA is historically significant as the site of the first professional basketball game played in the United States.

In partnership with Trenton Public Schools, the Capital Area YMCA provides free preschool in four classrooms with before- and after-care onsite. The Capital Area YMCA and Sisters Helping Others host a Food Pantry every 2nd Wednesday of the month and every Friday for individuals in the community. The Capital Area YMCA Y5K brings families, communities, and organizations together for a race that encourages participants to reach their fitness goals. The Community Dance Academy is described as the village that brings the community together with artistic expression through dance, and its dance offerings include an Award Winning Competition Dance Team. SilverSneakers® is described as a fun, energizing program that helps older adults take greater control of their health by encouraging physical activity and offering social events. Seasonal camps and specialty programs such as Small Adventures, Adventures, Camp at Rider University, DanceSense, martial arts, and STEM are listed as enriching experiences for youth. Maria Johnson is listed as part of the leadership team.
