The mission of Boys & Girls Clubs of Mercer County Youth Programs is to enable all young people, especially those who need the programs most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, and responsible citizens. The programs focus on improving youth outcomes in education, developing social emotional competency and leadership skills, and teaching youth to develop healthy lifestyles through physical activity and nutrition. Child safety is stated as the number one priority in all activities.

The organization has been inspiring youth for close to 90 years, beginning in 1937 when the Boys Club of Trenton was formed. It has served children in the Trenton area for 85 years, celebrated 80 years of service in 2017, and marked its 85th anniversary in 2022. Each year, more than 2,600 youth participate, including more than 1,500 young people from around Mercer County and members from 28 area schools, with teen members from almost every area high school.

Every summer, more than 700 children and teens take part in swimming, art, sports, dance, STEM, and exciting field trips through the Summer Camps. The organization also provides an After School Program at multiple area public schools in the Trenton and Ewing school districts, with After School Program locations at 10 area public schools. Busing is available from most area schools to the Clubhouses, transportation is provided from over two dozen area schools, and free after school transportation to the Spruce Street Clubhouse is provided from specified high schools.

The Club’s Keystone Club received 3 of 6 program awards at the Northeast Regional Conference. The Club was awarded a five-year 21st Century Grant to fund attendance of 200 middle schoolers in the After School Program. Members of the Rotary Club of Trenton joined the Board of Trustees and invested funds to make improvements to the Club facility.

Under outgoing president Charles E. Stokes, Jr., and incoming president J. Stuart Hill, the Club started a $500,000 capital campaign. President Richard M. Nixon, then board chairman of Boys Clubs of America, presided over the dedication of the Pennington Avenue Boys Club. Janet Krawtschenko was named President of the Board of Trustees and became the first female Board President, and Roxanne Spillett became the first woman to head the national Boys & Girls Club organization.
