Kids Camps introduces kids to clay through hand-building techniques, slab building techniques, and taking a spin on the wheel. Participants use aprons, tools, and access to recycled clay to create their pieces, then fire, paint, and glaze their favorite works, with three pieces fired as part of the class and additional pieces available to be fired for a minimal extra charge. Each child has a personal shelf to store their work during the class, and Kids Camps include a 15-minute snack break or recess with snacks provided.
• Ages: 5–12 years old
• Schedule: Camps during Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter breaks, plus afterschool classes that usually meet twice per week for 6 sessions
• Price: Access to the studio for $5/hr outside of class; Painted Pottery is $20 per person plus the price of bisqueware (most pieces are around $25)
Paseo Pottery’s Kids Camps and related classes are part of a ceramic studio and gallery that offers locally made pottery, daily pottery experiences, long-term classes and workshops, and monthly events such as the First Friday Throw Down public event on the first Friday of each month. The program states the mission, “We believe in making our community stronger through our passion for clay,” and operates as a fun, inclusive workspace welcoming people from all populations in Santa Fe’s diverse community. Kids Camps are offered by a studio founded in 1991, later taken over by owner Angela Smith Kirkman in 2018 from founders Janet Williams, Mike Walsh, and Ginny Zipperer. The organization donates 100% of profits to charity, has provided over $100,000 in cash and in-kind donations to more than 40 local nonprofits, and selects a local charity each month to receive net profits from First Friday Pottery Throw Downs, while stating that it operates on the occupied territory of Oga Po’geh, the land of the Tewa people, and stands in allyship with these communities, particularly the indigenous potter community.
